Initial Biomass Production and Soluble Carbohydrate Partitioning of Contrasting Elephantgrass Genotypes

    Get PDF
The initial growth and soluble carbohydrate (SC) partitioning were examined in the following classes of elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) genotypes: Dwarf (Anão, Mott and Roxo); Cameroon (Cameroon, Cameroon Piracicaba and Vruckwona); Embrapa hybrids (CNPGL F27-5 and Pioneiro); Interspecific hybrids (Hexaploide 201, Mercker X 23-A and Napier X 23-A; Mercker (Mercker Comum, Mercker Pinda and Teresópolis); and Napier (E.C. Itapemirim, Mineiro and Napier). After a 60-day growing period, total, leaf, stem and root FW and DW and stem, stem base, leaf and root SC content were determined. Cameroon-class cultivars showed the highest leaf and stem DW and whole stem SC levels. Cv. Napier exhibited the highest stem base SC content, suggesting superior regrowth capability. Dwarf-class cultivars showed reduced leaf DW and low stem base SC levels, indicating poor regrowth potential. Embrapa hybrids were high on both leaf and root SC contents, and the implications of such an attribute need to be verified

Co-segregation of recombinant inbred lines of the common bean to races 65 and 73 Colletotrichum lindemuthianum.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important legumes for direct human consumption (Lin et al. 2008). Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum is the most widespread, recurrent and devastating disease of the common bean in Latin America and Africa (Pastor-Corrales and Tu 1989). The genetic mapping is carried out using segregating populations. Obtaining segregating populations for genetic mapping have been standard practice in the common bean research (Gepts et al. 1993; Blair et al. 2006). These populations have led to detailed studies and promising to greater efficiency in the genetic breeding of the crop worldwide, but have as limitation, the small size (Sanglard et al. 2013). Thus, the objective of this research was to phenotype the recombinant inbred lines (RIL?s) population from AND 277 × Rudá cross with the 65 and 73 races of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum

The Effect of Steel Industrial Residue-Enriched Soil on the Initial Growth and Heavy Metal Profiles of Elephantgrass

    Get PDF
Heavy metal contamination of industrial sites are becoming a matter of growing concern. In spite of the substantial progress in the assessment of the influence of steel industrial plant waste on soil and water (Adamo et al., 2002), studies on the immediate responses of cultivated plants are still scarce. The objective of this experiment was to verify the short-term effects of soil added phosphate mud (P mud) or metallurgical scale (M scale), which are trace element-rich steel industry residues, on the initial uptake and heavy metal profiles of elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum

Within Resting Period Seasonal Soluble Carbohydrate Profiles of Rotationally Grazed Elephant Grass

    Get PDF
Recent evidence indicates that carbohydrate-rich grazed herbage is effective for improving milk production (Trevaskis et al., 2004). However, the dynamics of water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) seasonal accumulation as related to forage availability remains unknown, especially during the growth stage of tropical forage grazing systems. The objective of the work was to verify the seasonal WSC profiles of rotationally grazed elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.), by making measurements within each 30-day resting period

Portuguese emigration grew on the eve of the 25th of April, regressed to minimum levels after that date, increased again from the mid-1980s, became more accentuated at the beginning of the new century, decreased in the financial crisis of 2008, reached new historical highs in 2013 and has slowly declined since then. In comparative terms, Portugal is today a country of migratory repulsion, a characteristic that it shares with most Eastern European states. In this article, we present the recent history of Portuguese emigration, identify the mechanisms and episodes that explain it and discuss the methodological problems involved in its study.L’émigration portugaise a augmenté à la veille du 25 Avril, a régressé au minimum après cette date, a augmenté à nouveau à partir du milieu des années 80, s’est accentuée au début du nouveau siècle, s’est atténuée lors de la crise financière de 2008, a atteint de nouveaux sommets historiques en 2013 et a lentement diminué depuis lors. The Feasibility of Autoclave-Assisted Water Soluble Carbohydrate Extraction to Distinguish Annual Ryegrass Genotypes at the Seedling Stage

    Get PDF
Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) swards are being used increasingly in Southern Brazil as animal forage (Carvalho et al., 2001). As observed elsewhere, reduced forage availability and quality during dry or cold seasons often limits the efficacy of pasture utilisation. As reported by Meissner et al. (1992), this demands breeding efforts to improve forage nutritive value. However, lack of concurrent examination of large number of samples for important nutritional parameters, like water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) levels, which could lead to more precise selection strategies, is a common constraint of those programs. This study aimed to verify the suitability of using autoclave-assisted WSC extraction for concurrent screening of seedlings of annual ryegrass genotypes, aiming to establish early selection criteria

Fine mapping of anthracnose resistance allele Co-14 in the common bean cultivar and 277.

The objectives of this study were to fine-map the anthracnose-resistance locus in AND 277 and to identify DNA markers tightly linked to the Co-14 allele, previously mapped on Pv01
